PoE temperature sensor for rack cabinets: how it works and what to check before you buy
PoE temperature sensor for rack cabinets: how it works and what to check before you buy
  • 802.3af (PoE) supplies 15.4 W at the switch port and guarantees 12.95 W at the device. An environmental logger needs a fraction of that, so any PoE port will do.
  • The sensor lives on the LAN like any other host: built-in web page, SNMP read, JSON or XML over HTTP. No driver, no software.
  • Check five things before buying: standard, alarm channel independent of the cloud, number of sensor inputs, probe length, and what happens when the switch loses power.
  • The UPS that feeds the switch also feeds the sensor. Put the PoE switch on the UPS, and the logger keeps reporting through the outage.

Laboratory fridge and freezer temperature monitoring: probes, alarm delays and records that survive an audit
Laboratory Fridge and Freezer Temperature Monitoring — Probes, Alarms, Records
  • Use a buffered probe: a sensor in a glycol vial or aluminium block reads the temperature of the contents, not of the air that swings 5 °C every time the door opens.
  • Log at 30-minute intervals or shorter, with ±0.5 °C accuracy and a calibration certificate. Both the CDC and EU GDP expect this.
  • Set an alarm delay of 15–30 minutes on the warning threshold. Door openings then never wake anyone; a failed compressor still does within the hour.
  • Records must be exportable and retained: the auditor wants the chart for the week the freezer failed, not a signed sheet saying it was fine.

Server rack and network closet temperature: what is too hot, and how to monitor a rack without air conditioning
Server Rack & Network Closet Temperature — Limits and Monitoring
  • ASHRAE class A1 equipment is designed for an inlet of 18–27 °C recommended and 15–32 °C allowable. Measure at the inlet, not on the wall.
  • A closed rack in a closet without cooling can run 10–15 °C hotter at the top than at the floor. One sensor at the top front is the minimum that tells the truth.
  • The UPS battery is the first thing to die: VRLA batteries are rated at 20–25 °C and lose half their life for each 8 °C above that.
  • Power problems cause 45 % of serious outages and cooling 19 % (Uptime Institute 2025). In a small closet the two are the same failure.
